Healthcare Simulation South Carolina was created to expand research in health sciences, foster economic growth, and improve the health status of all South Carolinians through a six member institution collaborative effort. The six in institutions include Greenville Hospital System (GHS), Palmetto Health (PH), Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), University of South Carolina (USC), Clemson University (CU), and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS). HSSC is the first and only truly statewide integration of scientists, clinicians and data systems in the nation. The vision of HSSC is to improve the quality of life, health, and economic wellbeing of the State through a coordinated strategy of advanced health sciences research and education. HSSC member hospital systems represent more than 50% of hospital beds and discharges, over 60% of nursing students, and approximately 90% of general medical education residents in SC, as well as accreditation oversight of continuing medical education activities. This provides an unparalleled ability to impact the health care of an entire state with a single integrated research and education program. The Clinical Education and Patient Safety is one of 6 research areas of focus in the HSSC statewide collaborative effort. This unit is supervised by Dr. John Schaefer, the Endowed Chair in Patient Simulation Education at MUSC, who has overall responsibility for patient safety and simulation education across the state. When recruited, the endowed chairs at USC and Greenville Hospital System will have local responsibility for patient safety and simulation, as well as special responsibility for ensuring IT needs for this unit are met. While not strictly a part of the CoEE in Healthcare Quality, this previously funded CoEE is an integral part of the coordinated whole.
